Wallpaper on the ceiling: liquid, how to glue, photos and reviews

wallpaper

When renovating housing, the ceiling is often not left unattended, the owners are trying, among other things, to modernize this part of the room. To renovate ceilings today, several types of whitewash finishes are used, painting, installation of suspended and tension structures. However, despite the fact that more and more modern options appear, wallpaper on the ceiling is still glued to the same often.

As already noted, today there is a huge selection of materials for finishing. At the same time, they are all different in quality and properties, this makes it possible for everyone to choose the appropriate option.

What are the features of this type of finish

The fact that wallpaper is the leader among all types of finishing materials says a lot. In particular, that this material has a number of features:

  1. In comparison with a hinged or suspended structure, wallpaper is a more affordable material in terms of cost.
  2. A big plus is a wide assortment: a large selection of colors, patterns and reliefs. The material also differs in properties and characteristics. This makes it possible to choose wallpaper in accordance with design wishes and operating conditions.
  3. The finishing material is selected in accordance with the surface of the ceiling. In some cases, the wallpaper can hide small irregularities, which saves the owner of the home from time-consuming and costly preparatory work.
  4. As for the disadvantages, they also exist, and the main one is the service life.

    No matter how strong the material from which the wallpaper is made, they serve much less than a suspended structure or tension. As a rule, they can last up to 3-5 years, depending on the conditions in which they were operated. Imported counterparts last a little longer. Manufacturers from abroad produce wallpapers designed for repeated staining, which allows you to periodically update the appearance of the ceiling. In addition, it is thanks to the paint that they become stronger and acquire a moisture-resistant effect.

    Another minor drawback of this type of finish is the rather laborious process of pasting. In this case, many are worried about the question of how to glue the wallpaper on the ceiling on their own, since, unlike vertical surfaces, the horizontal one assumes the work of two people.

    To decide on the choice of wallpaper for the ceiling, you need to know at least a little about each type of material.

    What are the wallpapers

    As noted earlier, at the moment there is a fairly large selection of finishing products from both domestic and foreign manufacturers. The former are distinguished by a variety of patterns and colors, the latter, as a rule, by texture, since they are intended for coloring.

    Wallpaper can also be classified by service life, pasting method, performance characteristics, as well as the material from which the face layer is made. So what kind of wallpaper to choose for the ceiling?

    Paper

    It is the cheapest and most environmentally friendly material. In this case, the buyer can choose from a huge range of wallpapers by color scheme. Since this finishing material is made from natural raw materials, the wallpaper is good for air permeability, providing an optimal microclimate in the room. However, they do not have moisture-resistant abilities, and they can be used for pasting the ceiling in rooms where there is no high humidity, that is, they are not suitable for kitchens and bathrooms.

    You should not paste over the ceiling in the hallway with the hallway with them, since they are vulnerable to mechanical stress and cannot be processed using water.

    Another disadvantage of the paper type of wallpaper is their instability to ultraviolet rays. Over time, they begin to lose their color, and this happens in some places. As a rule, the service life that is allotted for paper wallpaper is no more than 5 years.

    This type of finishing material can have one or two layers. Most often, these wallpapers are used for ceilings in bedrooms, living rooms or children's rooms. Their plus is that they do not reduce the area of the room, in addition, they allow you to visually increase it or change the geometric parameters.

    As for the appearance, the paper-type wallpaper can be divided into the following types:

    1. Smooth when the design is applied to the canvas itself by typographic method. Before this, the paper is treated with a primer that is resistant to light (this prevents fading).
    2. Structural canvases consisting of two layers. In this case, the drawing is made with special moisture- and light-resistant compounds using screen printing.
    3. Wall murals, which consist of separate canvases, combined into a single pattern. If you approach work responsibly, the joints can be completely invisible.
    4. Vinyl

      Environmentally friendly type of finishing material, the wallpaper consists of a non-woven or paper backing and a vinyl top covering, which provides strength and moisture resistance.

      What are the pros of vinyl wallpaper:

      • density;
      • elasticity;
      • the presence of antifungal properties;
      • the ability to use in rooms with any lighting, since the canvases are resistant to fading, retain their color throughout the entire period of use;
      • they can be wiped with a damp cloth, so they can be used in the kitchen;
      • if we talk about non-woven vinyl wallpaper, then they have such a definite plus, as the absence of shrinkage, they can be used for decoration in new houses;
      • wide choice in terms of appearance: vinyl wallpapers are available in different textures for painting, with different patterns, coverings (embossed or smooth);
      • resistance to fire, however, when choosing, you should pay attention to the fact that the drawing is applied with paint, which does not include acetone;
      • large selection according to density indicators.
      • If we talk about such characteristics of vinyl wallpaper as moisture resistance and strength, then this type of finishing material is superior to paper counterparts. However, as for vapor permeability, in this regard, they are inferior to them. Therefore, it is not recommended to use them to decorate children's rooms and bedrooms.

        According to the manufacturing method, vinyl-type wallpapers are divided into the following types:

        1. Made from rubberized material - super washable. They are distinguished by special moisture resistance, as well as density, so they are glued even in the bathroom, in the kitchen.
        2. Cold-embossed fabrics. Their plus is that they help to hide small surface flaws.
        3. Wallpaper produced using the hot stamping method of the top layer - satin fabrics. The coating in this case can be either pearlescent or matte. As for the colors, it can imitate various materials, for example, plaster, textiles or stone. Another type of compact vinyl is silk-screen printing (but it requires a perfectly flat base).
        4. Wallpaper of inhibited type, i.e. produced by chemical embossing. They are considered one of the most moisture resistant and durable vinyl finishes.
        5. Non-woven

          Created on a paper-fabric basis, consisting of fibers held together by a special binder. This prevents the canvases from deforming during pasting and after they have dried. The process itself takes place quite quickly, since only the ceiling needs to be spread. In addition, this type of wallpaper allows for repeated staining. If there is a desire to update the appearance or change the color, this will not be a problem.

          Advantages of non-woven wallpaper:

          1. Natural and environmentally friendly material, which is ensured by the presence of 70% cellulose fibers in the fabric. It is safe and has excellent vapor permeability.
          2. This type of wallpaper is characterized by sufficient thickness, hiding irregularities. This also makes it possible to neglect preparatory work (leveling, elimination of cracks, priming).
          3. Thanks to the non-woven base, the wallpaper is resistant to stretching, as well as getting wet while working on the ceiling.
          4. The material is resistant to fading, while it does not emit toxic substances. This is a great choice for children's rooms.

            Textile

            Quite expensive material for ceiling decoration, very effective. A cotton, linen, silk or viscose coating is applied to a paper or non-woven base. Caring for such wallpaper should be very gentle, without wet cleaning methods. It is permissible to use only a vacuum cleaner.

            There are some products that have a moisture-resistant coating that allows you to wipe the cloths with a damp cloth. As for the cost, it depends mainly on what material is used for the front layer.

            Positive traits:

            1. The high price of textile wallpaper is compensated by their aesthetic appearance.
            2. This material creates an excellent visual effect, is considered prestigious, when pasting the ceiling, it seems that the seams are completely absent.
            3. Jute-based wallpaper retains its color for a long time. If they do fade a little, they can be easily painted.
            4. If the canvases contain velor fibers, they should not be used in small rooms, since they attract a lot of dust. That is why they are not suitable for finishing the ceiling in a children's room or bedroom.

              Liquid

              Another material related to expensive types of finishes is liquid wallpaper, photos and reviews of which can be found just below. Silk plaster, as they are called, consists of cellulose and glue. In some cases, silk or cotton fibers are added, which makes the wallpaper even more expensive, but at the same time more durable. In addition, finishing materials with silk do not fade throughout the entire period of use.

              To glue the liquid wallpaper on the ceiling, it is enough to dilute the dry mixture with decorative fillers with water (following the instructions), wait a while and apply to the surface with a spatula.

              The pluses of liquid wallpaper include:

              • a huge selection of shades and decorative appearance;
              • good fixation on any surface and elasticity;
              • naturalness, vapor permeability and environmental friendliness;
              • durability and high strength;
              • finishing the ceiling does not require preparatory work, and the application process itself allows you to remove all surface irregularities;
              • work is within the power of even a non-professional;
              • after the wallpaper dries, a coating is obtained without a single seam with good sound and heat insulation;
              • it is possible to eliminate defects arising during operation. This can be done by applying a new layer of wallpaper;
              • liquid wallpaper has a low flammability;
              • the material can be made more durable by applying an additional layer of varnish.
              • As for how to glue paper, non-woven, vinyl wallpaper on the ceiling, it is known that there are two technology options: either the canvases are smeared, or the surface. Finishing with liquid wallpaper is done in a slightly different way.

                To finish the ceiling yourself, you need to prepare a plastic grater, a trowel, a spatula from 16 to 60 cm and a spray bottle.

                The process of applying liquid wallpaper itself does not represent anything complicated and resembles working with putty. It is necessary to take a small amount of the mixture, apply to the surface and distribute in a thin even layer. This can be done both with your hands and with a spatula. It is best to use a grater for smoothing.

                Consumer feedback:

                Alexander, g. Tver: “We've never used liquid wallpaper before, but despite this, everything turned out to be quite simple. A great way to decorate both ceiling and walls. It hides surface imperfections well ".

                Ivan, g. Nizhny Novgorod: “Universal material for repair. In addition, you can fix holes that have appeared from damage at any time by making a small amount of a new mixture. ".

                Andrey, g. Tomsk: “I discovered this type of decoration and was surprised how simple and beautiful everything is. Plus, the room acoustics and sound insulation have improved. Wallpaper dries quickly and does not require further special care ".
